The Rationale Behind Raising in Poker

Raising in poker should be well planned and timed. There are various reasons why we raise and re-raise in poker games and a lot of them do not really have anything to do with some poker ruling on what phase or level our playing should be on before we raise. Be it the starting, middle, or ending phase of the game, a raise may be made. However, some basic rules are also considered, like raises are made basically on bets.
We should treat raises and re-raises with seriousness and caution. Often, the playing attitude of being tight and aggressive should be considered with our raises. Playing tightly means we are ready to raise with a good hand, or at least with something that can be withstand calls or be developed later into strong hand. Playing loosely means we would rather call than raise, giving opponents time to recoup their positions and pose for a strategy. Playing aggressively means we keep raising to get rid of weak players and bluffers who dare try to position in the pot with mediocre hands.
What we avoid is raising like a maniac. At times this tactic works to scare off players into folding. Raising of this kind are sometimes used by bluffers, but sometimes poker sharks also use them—and we better pay attention to their maniacal raises. However, too aggressive raises tend to scare players too soon and prevent us from building a big pot. Even with super hands we ought to calculate our raises just enough to be re-raised so that we let other players put in their share in the pot before we make a killing.
With raising we are basically saying we deem that we have a better hand than the first bettor and we're ready to prove that. Somebody may call that, and the caller is like saying, "Okay, prove it." We may also re-raise the raise we made earlier, and that's like saying, "Oh, you don't believe I have a strong hand, do you? I'll prove how strong my hand is." Or, if we re-raise someone else's raise, it's like saying "I have a better hand than your hand."
Raising in poker is sending a strong message across the table. In essence, we're saying that we're there because we mean business.
