The Importance of Risks in Raising in Poker

We must play to win—this is an obvious poker adage. Yet many players fail to do this each time. We inadvertently fall into the stupor of playing to reduce losing chances rather than playing to win.

It's understandable when players seem to falter with their goal so that instead of aiming to win they feel good just being able to reduce their losses. So they play timidly and avoid raising as often as possible. Raising in poker entails a lot of risks and often we're not sure if we have the highest hand in the game. Another thing is that we fear being re-raised. There are extreme players who are so hot about the idea of re-raising when they're raised. It's like an offense to them that they have to retort back with a raise.

And often, too, they re-raise even with hands not to strong for the move. But the bad thing is, we are often taken aback by this and would rather resort to being intimidated rather than fighting back. And raising is usually the only way of knowing the aggressive opponent really has. Thus, a factor in raising in poker is to carefully weigh the opponent as much as possible. Risks can be minimized when we know what other players have more or less before we raise. When we have a good read on their cards, we can call off the bluff of raising or re-raising players who are merely chancing upon positioning into the pot with not so strong, or else mediocre, hands.

Lots of players play easy on a strategy even when they are in the position to do so just because of the fear of being re-raised. When we have played the game long enough, and if we have sized up the players a good deal—plus noting the table playing condition—most times our raise hunches will work and we have to raise or let the rare opportunity pass by. Admittedly, our hunches will sometimes fail because we have misread hands—information in poker games will always be incomplete.

However, if we choose to always play safe and take fewer risks, like hesitating to raise until the perfect hand is held, we may reduce losing big pots with that. But our winnings will also be less. Hence, poker is often equated with raising. Raising entails many risks, but a lot of times it's better to risk because we might win, than hesitate because we might lose.
