Standard Pre-Flop Raising in Poker Tournaments
Pre-flop raises in poker tournaments are based on the following factors: the presence of blinds and antes, the size of our stacks, and the presence of limping players in the game.
The usual pre-flop bet raise if there are no antes ranges from 2.5x up to 4x on the big blind, with an average of 3x. So for instance, if the blinds are somewhere 10 to 20, the usual raising bet is 60, although bet amounts of 50 to 80 can also be possible. Just remember that an all-in decision of 1000 poker chips doesn't make sense if the blind bets are from 10 to 20, no matter what hand we have.
We would know poor poker by its raising amount. When there's a mere minimum bet made before the flop the poker play of that player is not effective. If we bet like this we only allow opportunity for the big blind to call our bet. Few strong players do minimum bets or raises pre-flop. If the blinds are 100 to 200 a low or minimum raise would only make 400. There are variations to pre-flop raising plays but the common remedy to minimum pre-flop raises is to play excellently after the flop to make up for the pre-flop minimum raise.
With antes in the pot our raises pre-flop should be a bit bigger compared to when there are no antes in the pot. Bigger pots goad us to protect them, hence, we play better and raise or bet from 3.5 to 4 times the blinds when there are antes. Three times the big blind is almost the same as 4 times the same, and in this case we opt for a lower raise.
In case the bets on the blinds are from 100 to 200 and our stack is 1,200, 600 would probably be the common raising amount. But this should not mean that we always place one-half of our stack in the raise. Basically, the proper raise amount is to use about a third of our chip stack before the flop, or go all-in.
If there are any limping players we should adjust our per-flop raising tactic. For instance, if we plan to raise 3 times the big blind, we raise 4 times when we sense a limping player. If two limp we raise 5 times, and so on.
Pre-flop raising in tournaments are based on several factors. We raise at certain amounts as per the poker situation at hand.
