Raising in Poker for Pot Size and Ridding Opponents

Raising in poker has a lot of uses. Among the reasons is sizing up the opponent's hand against our hand. Here are some more reasons.

Simply having a powerful hand is often reason enough to raise in poker. For instance, in an obvious situation where an opponent bets, three players decide to call, and we're next to act and we have a powerful hand—we often raise. With a strong hand we can plan to have the pot enlarged from everybody's contributions or bets by raising. That increases our chips stack, too. However, we don't have to wait for a strong hand to materialize before we can rasie.

For instance, we're playing as the button using an Ad and Kd and the flop has a Jd, 9d, and a 6c. This may be seen as a loose game. Then, the blind decides to bet and 4 players decide to call. Then it's our turn to make a move. The bet ratio is 5 is to 1 and waiting for 2 cards more the chances of ending up with a nut flush. We can anticipate a lot from the bet; bets can always translate into more profits because they're actually investments in the game, a lot of times, win or lose. With the right conditions, raising is a way of going closer to a large pot especially when we chance on making a good hit to make our hand the top hand. And that's investing in a game and on a hand.

Raising in poker helps us get rid of more players who are in the pot. For example, we have a pair of QQ, the blinds have not yet been called by any player, and we're fifth to act. Our hand will perform better if we pit it against one or at most two opponents. If we use the hand against more opponents we reduce our winning chances. With much fewer opponents, we raise to get rid of one or two players.

Now, say, should the player on our right decide to raise, we bet aggressively. Even if the player uses aces or face cards of various combinations, the higher the opponent's pair the better our chances of getting rid of the opponent. As long as the opponent has a top pair we should take advantage and re-raise. Just watch the flop—no over-cards to our QQ should emerge.

Raising in poker builds the pot and lessens opponents we have to deal with.
