Raising in Poker To Avoid a Free Card

A lot of times, on the flop, we raise for of a free card at the turn. But raising in poker also keeps other players from seeing a free card, even one that would cost them so little. For instance we have an A and a 10 and we're positioned fifth to act. Only the big blind, the eighth, and the ninth players remain on the flop.

The flop then shows an ace, a 9 and a 7. This makes the big blind decide to bet. When there's no raise pre-flop we cannot accurately guess what the big blind is up to and what the big blind's hand is. Big blind may have anything from an ace and a face card or an ace and a 9 or 7, or even a 9 and a 7. In any case, we don't stand a chance. But, the big blind may also be betting with a mere A and a 6 and chancing at the pot, hoping that no one has an ace.

Let's say that we have some inkling on the hands of the 8th and the 9th players, nonetheless we're not sure if our hand is the best. But since neither the 8th nor the 9th have raised pre-flop, there's a chance they do not have face cards like A and Q, or A and k, or A and J. They may call if they had something like a suited A and 5. But it looks more certain that what they have are mere connectors or small pairs.

With the same situation, either the 8th or 9th player has also had a set on the flop, though it's a long shot, but possible. Now, let's say they did, they'd probably keep mum about it until they get to the turn when they would be raising in poker. By that time the bets would have doubled. We may call if we choose to but raising is a better option here. If they have something like 10 and 9, or 9 and 8, they would probably call one bet on the flop.

If the eighth and ninth players are seasoned players, the last thing they'd do is call a pot already raised with mere lower pairs. When their hands have been defined pre-flop then raising in poker is proper to make them fold instead of avail of a free card.

Raising on the flop is not just for seeing a free card but also keeping opponents from seeing one.
