Bluffing with Check-Raising in Poker

Raising in poker with a semi-bluff using a draw hand is also an effective poker tool at times. With the right poker situation, this tool can help us win the pot sooner than expected.

Holding powerful hands in poker may warrant a check instead of a bet. This is a poker strategy aimed at goading a player to bet to pave the way for our raising in poker when our turn comes next. So for instance, we are coming from an early position armed with an ace clover and jack spade. The flop has shown an ace heart, jack diamond, and 6 clover. So what we do is decide to check our two-pair, and that made two players coming from the middle position to also check. Another player, from a late position, decides to bet. We raise in response.

The logic involved in check-raising is that drawing hands ought to be costly for those who dare make them. If holders of a straight or flush draw want to stay in the game, they must pay. Not only would we make them pay with a check-raise, check-raising in poker as a player from early position will also enable us to control of the hand. Should some players decide to call, they only give us more information about their hand strength. But best of all is, we made them pay dearly for attempting to out draw us.

Now with such drawing hand, we can decide to bet or raise, and that would be a semi-bluff. Let's say we are positioned late at the table with Qs and Js. The flop shows Qc, 7s, and 3s, giving us a flush drawing hand with 9 outs. If there are 4 players remaining in the hand and all decide to check, we bet, regardless of our hand. Those with pairs of 7 or 3 might fold, including those with low pocket pairs. If we hit a Q or J, we would still win even if there would be callers on our bet. This is because of our 9 outs to make a flush, plus perhaps 6 outs.

To make a player bet, we can always rely on a check instead of a bet when holding top hands. This enables our raising in poker. Bluffs may also be enhanced by raising in poker.
